The 40th Hong Kong Film Awards Announces the Winners of ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ and ‘Professional Achievement Award’

The Hong Kong Film Awards Association (HKFAA) today announced the winners of two of the most prestigious prizes at the 40th Hong Kong Film Awards.

Michael HUI Koon-man earned the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’, and Tony CHOW Kwok-chung took home the ‘Professional Achievement Award’ in recognition of their significant contributions toward Hong Kong cinema.

Derek YEE Tung-sing, chairman of the HKFAA, on behalf of the association, paid tribute to the iconic comedian Michael Hui Koon-man, as well as the ‘Golden Scissors’ Tony Chow Kwok-chung for their more than half a century of efforts to help successfully steer the local film industry forward.

The King of Comedy - Michael HUI

Renowned as the King of Comedy, Hui blazed new trails in 1970s Hong Kong cinema with his classic comedy films, all written, directed and starring himself. His box office record-breaking hits include his directorial debut film, in which he also starred: Games Gamblers Play《鬼馬雙星》in 1974, earning over HK$6 million, followed by The Private Eyes 《半斤八両》in 1976, taking in more than HK$8 million, and Security Unlimited 《摩登保鑣》in 1981, earning revenues of over HK$17 million. Moreover, his starring role in Security Unlimited earned him a Best Actor Award at the 1st Hong Kong Film Awards in 1982. His movies were also warmly received in Japan and elsewhere overseas, which helped bolster Hui’s gold standard reputation for movies.

Hui’s productions transformed the landscape of Hong Kong movie comedies with their series of non-stop jokes that guided the plots forward, all complemented by popular, colloquial dialogue. His films are widely acknowledged as leaving an indelible mark on our collective memory of the 1970s.

During the 1980s, Hui collaborated with other film directors to produce many more blockbusters like - Chocolate Inspector《神探朱古力》 (1986), Chicken and Duck Talk 《雞同鴨講》(1988), Mr. Coconut 《合家歡》(1989) and Always On My Mind《搶錢夫妻》 (1993). In his starring role in the Taiwanese black comedy road caper film - Godspeed 《一路順風》premiered in 2016, his subtle portrayal of a taxi driver added a distinctive charisma to the movie.

The Golden Scissors - Tony CHOW

Highly acclaimed for his work in the movie, the ‘Golden Scissors’ Tony Chow was the recipient of the ‘Professional Achievement Award’ at the 40th Hong Kong Film Awards. As the winner of multiple best editing awards at the Hong Kong Film Awards, Golden Horse Awards, and Asia-Pacific Film Festival, Chow has also served in a wide range of roles behind the camera, including executive producer, production planner, distributor, post-production professional, and others, making him truly an all-around film maker.

After graduating from school, Tony Chow began his cinematic career in his father’s film laboratory. There he also learned from various film editors and eventually met Karl MAK-ka, who allowed him to edit Mak’s debut film - The Good, the Bad and the Loser《一枝光棍走天涯》. This maiden collaboration sparked a long-lasting professional partnership between Chow and Mak. Since 1980, Chow edited all the films of Cinema City Company Limited during its early years. He also helped the company establish a dedicated editing team and recording studio, equipped with latest advanced technology from the United States, which resulted in a host of highly profitable film projects.

Afterward, Tony Chow joined forces with Ringo LAM Ling-tung, and CHOW Yun-fat to open a film production company, Silver Medal Production Limited. There he served as executive producer, planning executive, distributor and oversaw post-production duties. He also teamed up with his friends to establish True Technic Limited, and Fine Art Production Co., followed by the acquisition of Mandarin Film Lab Limited with Raymond WONG Pak-ming.

Working in film industry for over half a century, Tony Chow is still active in his support of the HKFAA, Federation of Hong Kong Filmmakers, Association of Motion Picture Post Production Professionals, and Society of Film Editors (HK), where he continues to share his valuable experience and professional knowledge with the next generation of Hong Kong film makers.
