The 41st Hong Kong Film Awards, the annual cinematic gala for the local film industry, will be held at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre on 16th April, 2023. The organizer, The Hong Kong Film Awards Association (HKFAA), released today the styling portraits of the nominees for “Best Actor” and “Best Actress” award categories.
The “Best Actor” and “Best Actress” awards for the Hong Kong Film Awards are the highly coveted honours among performers. For the “Best Actor” award this year, four graduates from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, namely Anthony WONG, Louis CHEUNG Kai Chung, YEUNG Wai Lun and MAK Pui Tung, are “laying siege” to Sean LAU, who was a trainee of television artist training class. LAU has won the “Best Actor” award twice at the 26th and 34th Hong Kong Film Award. His performance in Detective VS. Sleuths this year has already earned him the “Best Actor” title from the Hong Kong Film Directors’ Guild recently. This honour will surely help boost the chance of winning his third “Best Actor” trophy at the Hong Kong Film Awards.
Anthony WONG, Louis CHEUNG Kai Chung and MAK Pui Tung are vying for the award as well. Anthony WONG was first crowned the “Best Leading Actor” at the Golden Horse Awards last year for his role as a taxi driver in The Sunny Side of the Street. Louis CHEUNG Kai Chung also received the “Best Actor” Award from the Hong Kong Film Critics Society for his portrayal of a cleaning company owner in The Narrow Road who still helps the needy amid adversity. MAK Pui Tung was awarded "Best New Performer” at the 16th Asian Film Awards for his dedicated performance as a mildly retarded murder suspect of dismembering the victim in The Sparring Partner. YEUNG Wai Lun, playing a murderer who killed his parents and dismembered their bodies in The Sparring Partner, which was his first leading role in a movie has earned himself debut nomination for “Best Actor” at the Hong Kong Film Awards. His striking resemblance to the character’s archetype was highly commended by the barrister who has defended the actual suspect.
Of the top five “Best Actress” award nominees, four of them played the role of a mother in their respective films, including Teresa MO in Mama’s Affair, Sammi CHENG in Lost Love, Angela YUEN in The Narrow Road and Sylvia CHANG in A Light Never Goes Out. The exception in this category is Louisa SO who acted as a barrister to defend a murder suspect in The Sparring Partner. Her impressive performance showcasing the commanding and powerful demeanour of a senior counsel has successfully added colours to the film. Teresa MO first won the “Best Actress” award at the 37th Hong Kong Film Awards for her role as a mother in Tomorrow is Another Day. Five years after in Mama’s Affair, MO took up the role of a strong and successful working mother, who, as a former star-making artist manager returned to the entertainment industry raising new idols after years of being a housewife.
In Lost Love, Sammi CHENG portrayed an adoptive mother who took in foster children after the sudden death of her young son. Her outstanding performance has won her “Best Actress” title from both the Hong Kong Film Critics Society and Hong Kong Film Directors' Guild this year. Angela YUEN acted as a young single mother struggling with unemployment during the pandemic in The Narrow Road. Her breakthrough performance has earned her a nomination for “Best Leading Actress” at the Golden Horse Awards last year. Sylvia CHANG in A Light Never Goes Out played a widow who was devasted by the loss of her skilled neon sign-making husband but strived hard to fulfil his dying wish through making neon signs. CHANG’s outstanding acting has won her the “Best Leading Actress” at Golden Horse Awards last year.
