HKFAA today reveled the styling portraits of the five nominees for “Best New Performer”, namely NG Ping, Rondi CHAN, HUI Yuet Sheung, Curtis HO and Yoyo TSE (in order of the nomination list), leading up to the arrival of the grand occasion.

The "Best New Performer" category has seen the inclusion of child actor for the second year in a row with the side-by-side competition between Rondi CHAN and Curtis HO. Rondi CHAN, nominated for his performance in “Band Four”, is known as a young drum god. At the age of six, he was the drum accompanist for singer Leo Ku on the stage of the Hong Kong Coliseum. His talented drumming skills have astonished the audience with his impressive performances in various television variety shows. CHAN, with no prior film acting experience, portrays a gifted drummer in the movie. In one particular scene, his emotional breaks down in tears after his mother forces him to give up drumming and to focus on his academics has deeply impressed the viewers.

Curtis HO was ten years old when he appeared in “Time Still Turns the Pages”. He has been participating in television dramas since the age of six. He has also won numerous awards in piano and violin competitions, showcasing his versatility in performing arts. In the film, he plays a primary school student who excels in both academics and piano playing, and is being groomed by his father to become a successful person in the future. He has to face up that his elder brother who’s ability falls far behind him in all aspects. HO said that it was a challenge for him to suppress his cheerful personality and emotions to portray a well-behaved child.

Unlike the two child actors, the other three nominees for “Best New Performer”, NG Ping, HUI Yuet Sheung and Yoyo TSE, have either received formal training in performing acts or studied film-related courses. NG Ping is known for being an actress of the online video production team “Pomato”. She made her debut on the big screen as the leading role in the comedy “Say I Do To Me”. She portrays a clown artist and a YouTuber who, with her boyfriend, continuously creates news on their relationship in order to boost hit rate but in vain. She then escalates her lying by announcing a "one-person wedding" organized all by herself and this announcement has successfully sparked off overwhelming response. The film is packed with funny scenes and laughable bits. NG’s skillful acting has delivered the witty trickster characteristics; exaggerated facial expressions and playful, fun-loving personality of this role to the fullest.

HUI Yuet Sheung is a graduate of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. She plays a young journalist in “In Broad Daylight” which bags sixteen nominations at this year's Hong Kong Film Awards. HUI, who has never been involved in news reporting before, expressed her gratitude for the production team’s arrangement to meet the journalists who have previously investigated and reported on the scandals of a residential care home for the disabled. This meeting has allowed her to understand the investigation process and helped her effectively grasp the character and deliver a convincing performance as a passionate young journalist.

Yoyo TSE is nominated for the “Best New Performer” award at this year’s Hong Kong Film Awards for her role in “Fly Me To The Moon”. Her brilliant performance already earned her the same title in the Golden Horse Awards last year. In the film, TSE plays a young immigrant girl from the mainland China, whose father is a drug addict and is often in prison. She skillfully portrays the complex emotions of facing poverty and grappling with her identity. In her debut film, she had the opportunity to co-act with the Golden Horse Awards “Best Actor” WU Kang-ren, who plays her father. They had an intense fighting scene that was so “real” that TSE was later found accidentally injured by her “father” during the fight. The performance in this scene is a testament to the commitment and dedication of both actors.

The results of the "Best New Performer" Award together with the winners of the other 18 award categories will be announced at the 42nd Hong Kong Film Awards presentation ceremony on 14th April.
