The 42nd Hong Kong Film Awards, the prestigious annual event in the international Chinese-language film industry, will be held on 14th April at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. The Hong Kong Film Awards Association (HKFAA) released today the styling portraits of the award nominees for the "Best Director" and "Best New Director" categories.
The top five movies nominated for the "Best Film" title this year include "In Broad Daylight ", "Time Still Turns the Page ", "Mad Fate ", "Goldfinger", and "A Guilty Conscience". The directors of these five acclaimed works are Lawrence KAN, Nick CHEUK, Soi CHEANG, Felix CHONG and Jack NG, respectively, have all been nominated for the "Best Director" award. Lawrence KAN, Nick CHEUK and Jack NG are also shortlisted for the "Best New Director" category to compete with Sasha CHUK of “Fly Me to The Moon” and Jonathan LI of “Dust to Dust” for the honour.
Director and co-screenwriter Lawrence KAN’s film “In Broad Daylight” leads the race with sixteen nominations for the 42nd Hong Kong Film Awards. The film, adapted from a true story, has taken five years long to prepare and shoot. It unveils the issues of inadequate supervision and inhumane living conditions in Hong Kong’s care homes for the elderly and disabled. In addition to running for the titles of “Best Director” and “Best New Director” for this film, KAN is also nominated for “Best Screenplay” award together with his scriptwriting partners TONG Chui Ping and LI Cheuk Fung.
Second to “In Broad Daylight”, Nick CHEUK’s film “Time Still Turns the Page” receives twelve nominations in this year’s award. Based on a friend's suicide incident that he personally experienced, he explores heavy subjects of familial oppression and student suicide tragedy through the film. As his directorial debut, this film already won him the "Best New Director" and "Audience Choice Award" in last year's Golden Horse Awards. He also garnered the "Best New Director" awards at the 17th Asian Film Awards and Hong Kong Film Directors' Guild recently. These recognitions have undoubtedly bolstered his confidence to contend for the "Best Director" and "Best New Director" titles at the 42nd Hong Kong Film Awards. CHEUK, who is also nominated for the "Best Screenplay" award and, together with his film editing partner CHAN Hiu Chun Keith, for the "Best Film Editing" award, tops the list with four individual nominations this year.
Likewise, Jack NG also wins twin director nominations at this year’s award with his directorial debut. Together with the nomination for the "Best Screenplay" title, he earns a total of three individual nominations. Having worked as a screenwriter for many years, his first directorial film "A Guilty Conscience" is his co-written and directed work. This film has achieved tremendous success after its release, grossing over a hundred million Hong Kong dollars. It marks the first Hong Kong-produced blockbuster exceeding HK$100 million in the city's cinematic history.
In contrast to the new directors making their maiden appearances at the Hong Kong Film Awards, veteran director Felix CHONG has already taken home both one "Best New Director" award, one "Best Director" award and three "Best Screenplay" awards over the past two decades. He runs the race this year with his HK$350 million-production "Goldfinger", an adaptation of the infamous corruption and fraud scandal in the 1980s. This film garners 12 nominations including CHONG’s nomination for the "Best Director" title for the 5th time and the "Best Screenplay" award for the 10th time, making him a formidable contender.
Soi CHEANG receives a nomination for the "Best Director" for his suspense-thriller crime drama "Mad Fate ". This acclaimed film has already earned him the "Best Director" title at the recently held 2023 Hong Kong Film Directors’ Guild Awards. Should CHEANG succeed to clinch the directorial honour again, it would be his first time winning the "Best Director" after having been nominated in the 32nd and 40th editions of the Hong Kong Film Awards.
The 42nd Hong Kong Film Awards is supported and sponsored by various organizations, including Financial Supporter “Create Hong Kong” and “Film Development Fund”, Venue Sponsor “The Leisure and Cultural Services Department”, Official TV Broadcaster and TV Production Partner “HK Television Entertainment Company Limited (ViuTV)” and “MakerVille”, Dazzling Sponsor “Puyi Optical”, Million Tastes Sponsor “foodpanda Hong Kong”, Official Beer Sponsor “Blue Girl Beer”, Official Jewellery Sponsor “Chow Tai Fook Jewellery”, Official Limousine Sponsor “BMW”, Official Banking Sponsor “HSBC”; as well as Merchandise Partner “agnès b.” and “Moleskine”; Hotel Partner “Regent Hong Kong”; Official Media Partner “ELLE Hong Kong”, “Esquire Hong Kong” and “Style by SCMP”; Hair Styling Partner “GHD Good Hair Day”; Makeup Partner “Guerlain”, Post Production Partner “interface” and Advertising Partner “CVISION”.
