The 42nd Hong Kong Film Awards (HKFA) will be held on 14th April, 2024 at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. The organizer, Hong Kong Film Awards Association (HKFAA), released today the styling portraits of this year’s nominees for the Best Supporting Actor and Actress awards.
The ten nominees for the best supporting actor and actress categories for the 42nd Film Awards are drawn from six films. The film "A Guilty Conscience" secures three nominations including the portrayal of the senior prosecutor by TSE Kwan ho, the barrister by Renci YEUNG, and the socialite character by Fish LIEW. The film "In Broad Daylight" receives two nominations for David CHIANG and Rachel LEUNG who play the residents of a disabled care home. The "mother-son duo" Rosa Maria VELASCO and Sean WONG of "Time Still Turns the Page" are both on the final list. The remaining three nominations go to WU Kang Ren for his portrayal of a drug addict in “Fly Me To The Moon”, Elaine JIN as a domineering mother-in-law in “Ready O/R Rot”, and Jiro LEE for playing a security guard of a building in “Over My Dead Body”.
The nominees for the “Best Supporting Actor" this year include actors from different generations, veteran actors David CHIANG and TSE Kwan-ho, prime-aged WU Kang Ren and Jiro LEE, alongside the 11-year-old Sean WONG. CHIANG, TSE and WU, who were previous winners of “Best Actor” titles in other film awards, compete for the "Best Supporting Actor" title at the Hong Kong Film Awards this year.
Back in 1970, CHIANG was crowned the “Best Actor” at the Asia Pacific Film Festival. In “In Broad Daylight”, he portrays an elder with dementia living in a care home. His interactions with Jennifer YU, journalist in the film who poses as his granddaughter for investigation, are deeply touching. Taiwanese actor WU Kang-Ren just won the “Best Leading Actor” at the 60th Golden Horse Awards. In his Hong Kong movie "Fly Me To The Moon", he plays an immigrant from Hunan to make a living in Hong Kong. After arriving, he becomes addicted to drugs and is frequently incarcerated. He has to portray the character from the age of 40 to 60, which is a major acting challenge for him. Another Golden Horse Awards winner, TSE Kwan Ho, plays an upright senior prosecutor in “A Guilty Conscience”. His character adheres to professional ethics and legal principles. His courtroom sparring scenes with the lead actor Dayo WONG who plays the defense attorney are particularly impressive.
In the film “Over My Dead Body”, Jiro LEE represents a building’s security guard whose memory is exceptional. He effortlessly recites the detailed information of the residents swiftly, making the audience burst into uproarious laughter. Sean WONG plays a well-behaved but academically incompetent child in “Time Still Turns the Pages”. He is frequently physically abused by his stern father. If WONG makes a success to contend for the “Best Supporting Actor” title, he would be another youngest awardee after Gouw Ian Iskandar (吳澋滔) who won the same title at the 26th Hong Kong Film Awards.
Among the five nominees for “Best Supporting Actress” in this year’s Hong Kong Film Awards, veteran actress Elaine JIN is the most experienced. Having been nominated ten times and winning four times in this category, JIN is the actress who tops the “Best Supporting Actress” awardee list to date. She aspires to ascend to the stage to receive her fifth trophy for her supporting role in the film “Ready O/R Rot” as a strict and well-intentioned mother-in-law who brings a lot of pressure to her son and daughter-in-law.
Rachel LEUNG appears in “In Broad Daylight” as a mentally-disabled girl residing in a care home. LEUNG was nominated for the “Best Supporting Actress” at the Golden Horse Awards last year, and awarded the same title at the 17th Asian Film Awards recently. These achievements undoubtedly will boost her confidence in winning her first Hong Kong Film Awards trophy.
Fish LIEW, who won her first “Best Supporting Actress” award at the 40th Hong Kong Film Awards, plays an antagonist portraying a wealthy heiress in “A Guilty Conscience” this year. Both she and Renci YEUNG, who plays a righteous barrister in this film, are nominated for the “Best Supporting Actress” category. The performance of stage actress Rosa Maria VELASCO, who has made a transition to the film industry, as a miserable wife subjected to prolonged spousal abuse in “Time Still Turns the Pages” is highly commended and earns her a seat among the top five nominees for the “Best Supporting Actress” in this year’s Hong Kong Film Awards.
The 42nd Hong Kong Film Awards is supported and sponsored by various organizations, including Financial Supporter “Create Hong Kong” and “Film Development Fund”, Venue Sponsor “The Leisure and Cultural Services Department”, Official TV Broadcaster and TV Production Partner “HK Television Entertainment Company Limited (ViuTV)” and “MakerVille”, Dazzling Sponsor “Puyi Optical”, Million Tastes Sponsor “foodpanda Hong Kong”, Official Beer Sponsor “Blue Girl Beer”, Official Jewellery Sponsor “Chow Tai Fook Jewellery”, Official Limousine Sponsor “BMW”, Official Banking Sponsor “HSBC”; as well as Merchandise Partner “agnès b.” and “Moleskine”; Hotel Partner “Regent Hong Kong”; Official Media Partner “ELLE Hong Kong”, “Esquire Hong Kong” and “Style by SCMP”; Hair Styling Partner “GHD Good Hair Day”; Makeup Partner “Guerlain”, Post Production Partner “interface” and Advertising Partner “CVISION”.
