The 42nd Hong Kong Film Awards (HKFA) is set to take place on 14th April, 2024 at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. The organizer Hong Kong Film Awards Association (HKFAA) released today the styling portraits of this year’s nominees for the “Best Actor” and “Best Actress” Awards.
The five nominees running for this year’s “Best Actor” award includes Bowie LAM, LO Chun Yip, Tony LEUNG, Dayo WONG and Da Peng (listed in the order of the number of strokes of their respective Chinese film titles). Bowie LAM, LO Chun Yip, Dayo WONG and Da Peng are the first-time contenders for the top acting award title. Whoever wins the trophy, it would be a significant breakthrough in his performing careers. Tony LEUNG Chiu-wai having been crowned five times before, would set a new record for his personal achievements as well as in the history of the ceremony if he clinches the award again.
In the film “In Broad Daylight”, Bowie LAM portrays the warden of a residential care centre for the disabled, who is accused of sexually assaulting an underaged and mentally challenged resident. This role as an antagonist has earned him nominations for the “Best Supporting Actor” at last year’s Golden Horse Awards and for the “Best Actor” at this year’s Hong Kong Film Awards.
Tony LEUNG also acts as the protagonist in “The Goldfinger”, adapted from the largest financial fraud in the history of Hong Kong, who wields significant power in the stock market and excels in manipulating stock prices. LEUNG cast aside his usual restrained and understated acting style this time to deliberately showcase the character's arrogant and perverse personality.
LO Chun Yip is a teacher in “Time Still Turns the Pages” who grew up in a strict family under immense pressure. The childhood trauma he experienced has made him a person who suppresses his emotions and struggles to express himself.
In “A Guilty Conscience”, Dayo WONG plays a former barrister-turned-magistrate and then returns to private practice as a defense attorney. Due to his mistake, his client is wrongly convicted of manslaughter and is sentenced to a lengthy imprisonment. In a crucial courtroom scene that WONG fights to exonerate his client, he has to deliver a closing argument which is his longest monologue on the screen, leaving the audience breathless with the tense and pace created.
Mainland actor Da Peng plays a scheming businessman in “Dust to Dust”. The story spans two decades requiring him to present the changes of the protagonist throughout various time periods. His profound and reserved portrayal of the character creates a tense confrontation with the character plays by the renowned Hong Kong best actor winner LAM Ka Tung.
Regarding the five nominees for the “Best Actress” title this year, namely Kay TSE, Michelle WAI, Jennifer YU, Louise WONG and CHUNG Suet Ying, whoever wins will be her first time receiving this prestigious title.
In "In Broad Daylight" Jennifer YU takes up the role of a determined investigative journalist who works relentlessly in the pursuit of truth. She goes undercover as the close relative of a nursing home resident to investigate suspected abuse. Her outstanding performance has earned her a nomination for the “Best Leading Actress” at the Golden Horse Awards last year, and won her “Best Actress” titles at both the Hong Kong Film Critics Society Awards and the recent Hong Kong Film Directors’ Guild Awards. All these recognitions surely help boost YU’s confidence in vying her first “Best Actress” trophy at the Hong Kong Film Awards.
CHUNG Suet Ying also received a nomination for “Best Leading Actress” at last year’s Golden Horse Awards and is a contender of the same award for this year’s Hong Kong Film Awards. “The Lyricist Wannabe” is adapted from the personal experience of the movie’s director and screenwriter Norris WONG. CHUNG’s performance is remarkable with her portrayal of the director’s tirelessly effort to becoming a lyricist during her youth.
Canton-pop star Kay TSE receives her debut nomination for the “Best Actress” at the Hong Kong Film Awards. In the musical film "Band Four" she plays a musician suffering from young-onset dementia, facing the challenges of both pressures in life and complicated family relationships. She often vents her frustrations by losing her temper and lashing out at others.
Also playing the role of a mother on and off-screen, Louise WONG acts as a single mother in “A Guilty Conscience” who has to cope with the pain of losing her daughter and endures the unjust imprisonment due to a wrongful conviction for manslaughter. This is her second-time nomination for the “Best Actress” title after her debut at the 40th Hong Kong Film Awards two years ago. Michelle WAI, the fifth contender for the “Best Actress” trophy, showcases her talent in the comedy “Ready O/R Rot” in which she is caught up in the conflict with her husband's forceful mother who returns from abroad. The clash between the daughter-in-law and mother-in-law has produced many hilarious scenes of the movie.
The atmosphere for the prestigious Hong Kong Film Awards is gradually heating up. As the award presentation draws near, the HKFAA launches an exhibition in collaboration with agnès b., the merchandise partner of the 42nd Hong Kong Film Awards. The event commences today until 19th April, 2024 at the gallery of agnès b. in Tsim Sha Tsui. While the goddess statue symbolizing the Hong Kong Film Awards is the centre-piece of the event, the styling portraits of the ten nominees for this year’s “Best Actor” and “Best Actress”, and some precious exhibits from the past Hong Kong Film Awards ceremonies including ceremony programs, guest invitation cards, result announcement envelopes, etc. are also displayed. Visitors can take close-up photos for keep-sakes.
HKFAA will also hold a special photo exhibition at the foyer exhibition area of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre from 8th to 14th April, 2024 to display the styling portraits of the nominees taken for the 42nd Hong Kong Film Awards Booklet, including “Best New Performer”, “Best New Director”, “Best Director”, “Best Supporting Actor”, “Best Supporting Actress”, “Best Actor” and “Best Actress”, as well as the recipients of the “Lifetime Achievement Award” and “Professional Achievement Award”. The public and film enthusiasts are welcome to come visit and take pictures.
