The 43rd Hong Kong Film Awards will be held on 27th April, 2025 (Sunday) at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. During the Awards Presentation Ceremony evening, nineteen awards will be presented, including the categories ‘Best Film’, ‘Best Director’, ‘Best Actor’, ‘Best Actress’, ‘Best Supporting Actor’, ‘Best Supporting Actress’ and more. The Hong Kong Film Awards Association (HKFAA) released today the styling portrait of the nominees for ‘Best Director’ and ‘Best New Director’ to be featured in this year’s commemorative publication.
A strong lineup of thirteen directors nominated for this year's ‘Best Director’ and ‘Best New Director’ awards comprises 6 best director nominees and 7 best new director nominees. The nominees for ‘Best Director’ include (listed according to the nomination list) Soi CHEANG (for Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In), co-directors Philip YUNG and AU Cheuk Man (for Papa), Adam WONG (for The Way We Talk), CHAN Mou Yin, Anselm (for The Last Dance), and Ray YEUNG (for All Shall Be Well). All of their works also compete for the esteemed ‘Best Film’ award this year.
The HKFAA has broadened the entry criteria for the ‘Best New Director’ award this year to allow co-directors to participate in the competition. Among the five nominations in this category, seven new directors are vying for the accolade, including (as listed in the nomination order) Jill Lai Yin LEUNG for the fantasy romance Last Song For You, HO Miu Ki for the romantic comedy Love Lies, twin brothers Albert LEUNG and Herbert LEUNG for the action drama Stuntman, Robin LEE for the documentary Four Trails, and co-directors Thomas LEE and Daniel HO for the narrative film An Abandoned Team.
Of the seven ‘Best New Director’ nominees, HO Miu Ki and Robin LEE have received more than one nomination. HO Miu Ki together with veteran screenwriter CHAN Hing Kai are both nominated for ‘Best Screenplay’ for their film Love Lies and the movie’s song co-written by HO and lyrist LEUNG Pak-kin is also nominated for the ‘Best Original Film Song’ category. HO, with a total of three nominations, is the most nominated director at this year's awards. On the other hand, Robin LEE has garnered two nominations; besides ‘Best New Director’, he is also in the running for ‘Best Film Editing’ for his documentary work Four Trails.
Soi CHEANG, the Best Director at the 42rd HKFA, has brought the vibrant yet chaotic atmosphere of the 1980s Kowloon City back to life in his action film Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In. The movie portrays the lawless district where gangs conducted illegal operations and battled for control, featuring thrilling martial arts sequences that captivate the audiences. The film not only achieved over HK$100 million in box office revenue but also received fourteen nominations at this year's awards. Additionally, it has entered the ‘Midnight Screenings’ section last year at the 77th Cannes Film Festival and represented Hong Kong to compete for the Best International Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards, earning significant international recognition.
Co-directors Philip YUNG and AU Cheuk Man have adapted into the film Papa the real-life shocking murder case from over a decade ago, in which a mentally unstable son killed his mother and sister. The story explores the father's turmoil as he struggles to deal with the relationship with his son following the devastating loss of his wife and daughter. This marks AU's first nomination
for ‘Best Director,’ while YUNG is competing for the same title once again since the 35th Hong Kong Film Awards. Additionally, YUNG has received a nomination for ‘Best Screenplay’ for this film.
Adam WONG, the ‘Best New Director’ at the 33rd Hong Kong Film Awards, has received a nomination for ‘Best Director’ ten years later for his film The Way We Talk. The film tells the story of three deaf protagonists as they navigate their lives and challenges from childhood to adulthood. This film is WONG’s sincere production with heartfelt effort, a result of five years of research and a deep understanding of the deaf community and culture.
CHAN Mou Yin, Anselm sets his debut in the ‘Best Director’ category with his self-written and directed film The Last Dance, which has become the highest-grossing and most-viewed Hong Kong-produced film in history. The film explores interpersonal relationships and life-and-death topic through the Taoist funeral rite known as ‘Breaking Hell’. In addition to CHAN's nomination for ‘Best Director’, he together with his screenwriting partner CHENG Wai Kei are also nominated for the ‘Best Screenplay’ category. With a total of eighteen nominations across various categories, ‘The Last Dance’ leads this year's Hong Kong Film Awards and hits the record set by Bodyguards and Assassins at the 29th edition in 2010.
Ray YEUNG is among the final five contenders for both ‘Best Director’ and ‘Best Screenplay’ with his self-written and directed film All Shall Be Well. Following his debut at the 39th Hong Kong Film Awards with Suk Suk, he returns five years after to explore the lives of a lesbian couple. The film highlights the issues of acceptance and contradictions by their families and Hong Kong society in the face of same-sex relationships. The sudden passing of one partner arouses vigorous discussion about same-sex marriage and inheritance rights in the society.
