The Hong Kong Film Awards Association (HKFAA) held a press conference today to officially announce that the annual international Chinese-language film event, the 43rd Hong Kong Film Awards (HKFA), will take place on Sunday, 27th April 2025, at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. The HKFAA has specially arranged the live-streaming of the event via its
official Facebook page . The award presentation ceremony will honour the winners of 19 award categories, as well as to present two distinguished accolades – the “Lifetime Achievement Award” and the “Professional Achievement Award” to the film-makers, in recognition of their remarkable contributions to the Hong Kong film industry.
A highlight of today’s press conference is the announcement of the
nominations for the 19 categories of the 43rd HKFA. Angela YUEN, previous nominee for the “Best Actress” at the 41st HKFA; Yoyo TSE, awardee of the “Best New Performer” at the 42nd HKFA as well as promising new talent Marf YAU and George AU@P1X3L were invited as special guests to jointly unveil the nomination list for all awards.
The awards pride itself as the most long-standing, largest in scale and most iconic international Chinese-language film gala event in Hong Kong. HKFAA Chairman Derek YEE Tung Sing said in his speech at the press conference, “Starting from the current Board of Directors' term (2024-2026), the HKFAA has expanded its representative scope with the inclusion of three new associations, the Hong Kong Assistant Directors' Association, the Hong Kong Association for Pictures and Sound Production and the Hong Kong Visual Effects Association, bringing the total number of representatives from fourteen professional film associations to seventeen. With the joining of these three associations, the number of eligible first-round voters for this year’s Hong Kong Film Awards has exceeded 2,000, further enhancing the professionalism, inclusiveness, and fairness of the selection process. This milestone also reflects the unity and progress of Hong Kong’s film industry, while significantly strengthening the representativeness of the Hong Kong Film Awards.
Chairman YEE also announced that, after auditing the votes in the first round of polling, the total number of valid votes was 1313 and the voters’ turnout rate of the Awards was 64.84% last year, representing a new high since the 40th HKFA in 2022. On behalf of the HKFAA, he expressed gratitude to the juries of the first round of polling and voters of the Hong Kong Film Awards for casting their votes actively. He also appealed to all voters of the second round to continue their enthusiastic support in the upcoming second round of voting, to jointly select outstanding local films and exceptional talents for the 2024 awards.
Chairman YEE said, “In 2024, a total of 46 Hong Kong films were eligible for contending in the 43rd HKFA. Although this is slightly lower than the 50 films in 2023, these productions cover a diverse range of genres and wide-ranging themes. Moreover, the recent emergence of new talents both on-screen and behind-the-scenes has provided vitality and generated talking points in Hong Kong. We are delighted to witness the exceptional success of two highly acclaimed productions last year, “Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In” and “The Last Dance”, both surpassing box office earnings of HK$100 million. “The Last Dance” even achieved a historic milestone by breaking the box office record previously held by “A Guilty Conscience”, the Best Film of the 42nd Hong Kong Film Awards. It also set a new record in audience attendance, becoming the Hong Kong-produced film with the highest number of admissions in history. To further inspire new directors to actively create and release their works, the HKFAA has expanded the eligibility criteria of the "Best New Director" award category to allow co-directors to join the competition, providing emerging directors with more opportunities for nominations and recognition.
Moreover, results of “The 43rd Hong Kong Film Awards Student Poster Design Competition” held previously were also announced and the awards were presented to the winners in the press conference. The winning entries were also displayed at the venue today. The winning entries were selected by the judges of the competition, comprising MUI Kinoshita and Eddy HUI, Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Hong Kong Designers Association; and Alex MOK, Vice President and Irving CHEUNG, Executive Committee member of the Hong Kong Film Arts Association. During today’s press conference, three judges Eddy HUI, Alex MOK and Irving CHEUNG presented the trophies and gift coupons to the winner CHEN Zerou, René of The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts; the first runner-up MOK Dick Ka of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University; and the second runner-up WONG Kai Yiu of City University of Hong Kong.
The HKFAA thanked venue sponsor the ‘Leisure and Cultural Services Department’, as well as all sponsors and partners for rendering their tremendous support to the event.
HK Television Entertainment Company Limited (ViuTV) and MakerVille will continue to be the official TV Broadcaster and TV Production Partner to live-broadcast the 43d Hong Kong Film Awards Red Carpet and the presentation ceremony on its free-to-air ViuTV Channel No. 99.
