Hong Kong Film Awards Association Reveals “Best New Performer” Nominees’ Styling Portraits in The 43rd Hong Kong Film Awards Special Booklet

(https://www.facebook.com/share/p/196z6pQ8SD/)

The Hong Kong Film Awards Association (HKFAA) will publish a special commemorative booklet to mark the Hong Kong Film Awards, the annual grand event of the international Chinese-language film industry. Following the announcement of the nominations for the 43rd Hong Kong Film Awards in mid-February, HKFAA has invited this year’s nominees for "Best Director", "Best Actor and Actress", "Best Supporting Actor and Actress", "Best New Performer" and "Best New Director" to participate in the photoshoot for the publication. Today, with a month leading up to the Awards Ceremony on 27th April, 2025, HKFAA reveled the styling portraits of the five nominees for “Best New Performer” (https://www.facebook.com/share/p/196z6pQ8SD/), namely LAU Wai Ming, Ian CHAN, Dylan SO, NG Tsz Ho Marco and Marf YAU (listed according to the order of the nomination list).

Among this year's five finalists for the "Best New Performer", Marf YAU, a member of the popular girl group COLLAR, stands out as the only female nominee. In her debut film "Blossoms Under Somewhere", she plays a student of a famous school who struggles with a stutter and lacks self-confidence, often feeling neglected due to her parents' frequent absence. While she appears to be an innocent girl in the eyes of her teachers, her loneliness drives her to seek affection, leading her to secretly engage in selling underwear with her classmates in hopes of attracting buyers' attention.

To deliver an impactful performance in her first film, YAU abandoned her avant-garde singer image. Her deeply engaging and transformative presentation has earned her a nomination for "Best New Performer." Additionally, the film's theme song "Lak1 Kak1”(㪐㩿) that she sings is also nominated for "Best Original Film Song". This remarkable achievement of securing two nominations in her first appearance at the Hong Kong Film Awards is truly commendable.

Ian CHAN, a member of the popular boy group MIRROR as well as a singer, made his debut on the big screen as the leading role in "Last Song For You". He earns a nomination for this year’s "Best New Performer" award. He is also nominated for "Best Original Film Song" for the title track, which he sings alongside another leading actor Ekin CHENG. In the film, CHAN portrays a reserved young man who is deeply passionate about music. He often expresses his emotions and thoughts through his performances. While he has previously played student roles in television dramas, this time he shares the role with CHENG to portray the innocent youthhood and frustrating adulthood, respectively. To convince the audience the roles they portray at different life stages are the same person requires significant acting skill, making it a considerable challenge for CHAN.

Novelist LAU Wai Ming, commonly known by his pen name "KIU Ching Fu," appears in "Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In"as a martial arts master and owner of a food stall in the walled city. LAU is trained in karate, taekwondo and Wing Chun since early youth, and has previously filmed martial art related documentaries for the Radio Television Hong Kong, giving him valuable on-screen experience. Although he plays a minor role in the film, his character is vividly portrayed, particularly in two fight scenes with Richie JEN and Sammo HUNG, leaving a lasting impression on the audience. This performance has garnered him the favour of the first round of Hong Kong Film Awards voters and juries, making him one of the five finalists for "Best New Performer."

Dylan SO was sixteen years old when he made his acting debut in "PaPa", portraying a schizophrenic teenager who commits a tragic crime against his mother and young sister. He shares several scenes with his on-screen parents, played by veteran actor Sean LAU and actress Jo KOO. Instead of being overshadowed by their performances, SO’s genuine and straightforward portrayal adds depth to his character. Earlier this month, he just won the "Best New Performer" at the Hong Kong Film Directors' Guild Annual Awards and also received a nomination for the same title at the recently held 18th Asian Film Awards. These accomplishments have significantly boosted his confidence as he aims for the title of "Best New Performer" at this year's Hong Kong Film Awards.

NG Tzs Ho Marco is another layman before portrays a deaf young man in "The Way We Talk". As a deaf individual himself, NG brings authenticity to the film's exploration of the culture and identity issue of the hearing impaired. With an outgoing personality and a strong desire to perform, although he has never acted in any film before. his background in dancing with formal training since childhood and participation in a dance troupe allows him to immerse himself naturally in his first film role, earning him a nomination for "Best New Performer."
