A total of 11 directors are competing in the final round for Best Director and Best New Director, including 7 Best Director nominees and 6 Best New Director nominees. The nominees for Best Director include (according to the nomination list order) SHU Qi (for Girl), Tommy NG Kai Chung (for Another World), Patrick LEUNG Pak Kin (for Ciao, UFO), co-directors Jonathan LI and CHOU Man Yu (for Behind the Shadows) and co-directors Peter Ho-sun CHAN and HAN Shuai (for She’s Got No Name). Another World, Ciao, UFO and She’s Got No Name are also nominated for this year’s Best Film award.

6 new directors are nominated for the 5 Best New Director places this year. The nominees include (according to the nomination list order) SHU Qi for the coming‑of‑age drama Girl, Tommy NG Kai Chung for the fantasy animation Another World, KUNG Siu Ping for the time‑travel romance Measure in Love, Juno MAK for the crime action film Sons of the Neon Night, as well as co-directors KWOK Ka Hei and Jack LEE Chun Kit for the mystery thriller Unidentified Murder.

Among the Best New Director nominees, KUNG Siu Ping earns a place with his first feature Measure in Love, which has 5 nominations including art direction, costume and music. Juno MAK’s Sons of the Neon Night receives 12 nominations in total, making it one of the hottest contenders this year. Co-directors KWOK Ka Hei and Jack LEE Chun Kit are also nominated for Best Screenplay with Unidentified Murder, while actor CHAN Charm Man Peter is nominated for Best Supporting Actor for the same film.

SHU Qi, long recognised for her acting, now steps behind the camera and is nominated for Best Director for her debut feature Girl. The film follows a teenage girl and her conflicts with family and friends, showing modern women balancing family duties and personal dreams. Girl is also nominated for Best Screenplay and Best Cinematography.

Tommy NG Kai Chung is a new‑generation local animation creator who has won many international awards for his short films. His fantasy animation feature Another World earns him nominations for both Best Director and Best New Director. Adapted from a Japanese novel and set in the afterlife, the film tells the journey between a soul guide and a young girl across life and death, with striking yet harsh visuals exploring obsession and forgiveness.

Experienced director Patrick LEUNG Pak Kin receives his first Best Director nomination with “Ciao, UFO”. Inspired by alleged UFO sightings in Wah Fu Estate, the film follows three childhood witnesses across several decades. Using a gentle and detailed style, it blends Hong Kong memories from the 1980s onwards into the story and shows city dwellers searching for their original aspiration and a sense of belonging; the film has ten nominations this year.

Behind the Shadows, co-directed by Jonathan LI and CHOU Man Yu, uses a crime mystery to frame an urban emotional drama, earning them a shared Best Director nomination. The story begins with a detective investigating an affair and being drawn into a series of murders, slowly revealing broken marriages and relationships. The film brings emotional depth to the mystery genre, earning director CHOU a Best Screenplay nomination and Louis KOO a Best Actor nomination for his performance in the film.

Peter Ho-sun CHAN, a two‑time Best Director winner at the Hong Kong Film Awards, teams up with new‑generation director HAN Shuai for She’s Got No Name. Based on a famous dismemberment case in 1930s Shanghai, the film focuses on a woman accused of killing her husband and retells the case from multiple viewpoints. With realistic sets, detailed art direction and strong ensemble scenes, the film explores gender power, domestic violence and trial by public opinion, and has 7 nominations in total.
